Beginner’s guide to pick the perfect sunscreen this summer


March marks the beginning of the most dreaded season for any Indian. This is when most of us get to see the tanned version of oneself. Not every time you can excuse yourself from joining an outdoor trip with friends or going for work related site visits to avoid the tan.
Never a user of sunscreen before, I realized its importance when I started staying outdoors for long hours in the scorching sun by virtue of my job.
With too many brands available in the market, my biggest challenge was to select the appropriate one.
I am sure lot of people out here too have similar concerns on picking up the right one for yourself. I did quite a good amount of research before buying one for myself. 

Here are the 3 most important features which can guide you to choose your perfect sunscreen this summer
11) The most critical one is SPF. SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. It represents how much protection you can get from the sun.  Any SPF greater than 30 is effective in its job.
SPF 30 sunscreens filter out about 97%, SPF 50 sunscreens about 98%, and SPF 100 about 99%
SPF 15 does filter out 90% of the rays but personally I do not suggest going with SPF 15 for Indian summers.
I personally recommend to go for SPF 30 if the hours of stay are minimal and SPF 50+ for longer hours of stay.
Irrespective of the SPF, the effectiveness of the sunscreen reduces after 2 hours. So make sure you reapply every 2hrs.

   2) Broad spectrum protection: Look for a sunscreen that has “broad spectrum” protection on its label. It means you get protection from both UVA and UVB rays. UVB causes sun burn and skin cancer whereas UVA contribute to premature aging due to excess exposure to sun.

      3)Water resistant: If you are the kind who sweats little too much or in the swimming pool, go for one that is water resistant. SPF is maintained for at least 40 minutes for a good water resistant sunscreen.
